This VAS 6154 Interface is the latest interface for the diagnostic and programming applications VAG ODIS-S (Service) and ODIS-E (Engineering),it replaces the VAS 5054A.
Available for Off-board Diagnostic Information Engineering from version 6.2 onward and Off-board Diagnostic Information Service from version 3.0.3 onward.

AUTEL MaxiDAS DS808 KIT (Personal experience)

Paid one Autel Maxidas DS808 kit scanner and service reset tool and was asked to provide an objective review on its operation and capabilities. I was interested to see how things had developed for Autel, as my previous experience of Autel diagnostic equipment was the first generation, Autel Maxidas DS708.

  1. First impression to the full package

When Maxidas DS808 arrived at me, the carry case looked something differently as the Autel DS808. Inside the case the host hardware was a compact, smart, rugged, android tablet. This was partnered by many good quality diagnostic adapters including those non-standard 16pin connectors, as well as a thick user manual on how to operate this machine.

  1. Autel Maxidas DS808 tablet

The Autel Maxidas DS808 tablet was light and compact and was very comfortable in hand. For such a compact package, the Power Sources is optional incl.: Internal Battery Pack, vehicle power, external power supply by connecting the packed power adapter. For the battery life it has a large capacity 3.7 V/3200 mAh lithium-polymer battery. Besides its new processor (Cortex-A9 processor (1.5 GHz), 7.0” LCD Capacitive Touchscreen and the Ambient Light Sensor which can detect ambient brightness when it is inside the workshop, thanks to the screen finish and a good quality display.

  1. Feeling on general use – quick and smart to operate and update

The software look and feel are both very good in terms of layout and size and the touch screen operation worked flawlessly in conjunction with its large, clear icons. Ds808 was quick to get going from the initial power up to operate. The response in moving through the menus and executing tasks was immediate.

Downloading and running updates speed (which depends on the internet connection speed) was reasonable. The ‘services/update’ section of the software on the Autel DS808 notifies the user of pending updates, and it’s a ‘click and go’ procedure to set the updates running. And During general use I found that the Wifi communication connected stably when I used it.

  1. Autel DS808 performance:

The Autel Maxidas DS808 has wide and comprehensive system coverage, covers all of the prevailing makes and models. A detailed report of software coverage was beyond the scope of my brief. However, I did use the Autel Maxidas DS808 for a typical range of general workshop tasks (ECU information, trouble codes, freeze frame, live data, active test and special functions) on a typical range of workshop makes and models.

Also the “auto detect VIN” and “manually input VIN” are user-friendly design.

  1. Graphing a live data stream:

One of the features I believe that a diagnostic scan tool should have is graphing a live data stream. The reason that this is so important is to enable the vehicle technician to examine the relationships between the various sensors, actuators and calculated values. This is critical for intermittent fault finding and for vehicle problems which don’t set diagnostic trouble codes. In this respect the Autel Maxidas DS808k did a good job. The live data is selected from an array of available parameters and then graphed. The graphed data can be shown as separate graphs or combined in a job graph. The scales are auto ranging and they can be reset to align them to the current operating conditions.

  1. Many special functions

Another nice feature is its special functions, especially when it compares with maxidas ds708. These functions perform various component adaptations, allowing you to recalibrate or configure certain components after making repairs or replacement.

The main menu displays the supported special functions for the test vehicle. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the desired function. When the operation is done, an execution status message such as Completed, Finished or Successful, displays. Tap the ESC button to exit the function.

The most commonly performed service functions include: Oil Reset Service, TPMS Programming Service, EPB Service, ABS/SRS Services, SAS Calibration Service, DPF Regeneration Service

By following the on-screen instructions to select appropriate execution options, enter correct values or data, and perform necessary actions, the system will guide my through the complete performance for various service operations.

Using ds708 many years, so I quickly find there are several applications are newly developed, they are AutoVIN Technology, MaxiFix Cloud-based information system, Shop manager. Valuing the user experience is the Company soul, I think Autel Company do a good job. I try these new applications one-by-one, and prove what they claim in the following table.

  1. Data logging reports: submit via wifi and print

Autel Maxidas DS808 is allowed to submit Data Logging Reports in diagnostics.The reports are saved to the internal memory (which is a not insignificant 32 GB, depending on the hardware specification). As the tablet is equipped with WIFI, these can be emailed to the office or directly to the customer.

The Data Manager application is used to store, print, and review the saved files. Most operations are controlled through the toolbar.

In the toolbar buttons, you could see the “Print”, click it and go. Printing the reports directly is a little more challenging. In my case, I had to install a separate PDF viewer, and to realize the wireless data printing function, I need to install the printer driver program by following the instruction. This made getting the reports off the device a little long winded. My opinion is that it would be more convenient if the print button could be configured to call other installed printer drivers.

  1. TeamViewer Quick Support program:

The “Remote Desk” app is remarkable, it launches the TeamViewer Quick Support program, it is a simple, fast and secure remote control screen. I could use it to receive ad-hoc remote support from Autel’s support center, colleagues, or friends, by allowing them to control my MaxiDAS tablet on their PC. Therefore I need not phone call any more. TeamViewer ID would be the phone number. Make sure the Display Tablet is connected to the Internet before launching the Remote Desk application.

Conclusion:

I think highly of Autel Maxidas DS808, I highly recommend it to the small repair shop. It is rugged, running fast, easy to use, light and add many special functions comparing autel ds708.

Renault Clio was my first subject to observe, I connect the Actia multi diag 2016 to under the dashboard steering side OBD connector. It helped erase an engine code, reprogrammed mutlifunction steering angle sensor, code injector. Then VCI enabled to detect some parameters. Here are some pictures I taken. I figured out that Actia multidiag can not only do some basic diagnosis, but also write it as the official tester ecu for any updates, drivers.

The first experience was successfully, but I realized that it ran slow than I imaged. So I decided to dissemble the device and check what the PCB inside look likes. I googled and found a little tutorial on MHHAUTO forum to modify the PCB to make it works faster. Here is the modified PCB.

Second vehicle I tested was a BMW MINI 2011. One client took his car to my garage because the airbag light constantly flashed. I tested it with VCI but no code stored. I checked some other parameters and all fine. Then I disconnected the battery, and did a battery reset for half an hour. The

SRS light went off finally.

Lauch x431 is better than easy diag. If you really want one cheap with some bi-directional control a DS150e chinese clone is ok but you’ll need to set it up on a laptop.

I’d recommend Easydiag and Vlads Software 1 year update . It gives you id say 95% of what real x431 xpro3 can , i’m speaking about basic functions that original would have that cracked easydiag to xpro3 wouldn’t have 1 or 2 .

How to use/switch/connect to K-Line or Dcan pin 7&8? I have one of those K+DCAN USB cables and I am confused about how to switch the modes of it. Here are good tips i found, of the switch-mode k+dcan usb cable user manual. All i’ve collected just for education.

About the switch-mode K+DCAN interface

I assume the reasons being that on DCAN cars one pin is used for a ethernet connection and the other to the K data line – on K line cars, both pins are connected to K data lines and that creating a switch mode circuit would cost more than the interface is worth. The 2 most sensible options are both hardware-related:-

  1. Use an adapter (such as the one sold by One Stop electronics) which internally bridges pins 7 & 8 or,
  2. Mount a small switch on the OBD plug end of your adapter, which can bridge (for K line) or separate (for DCAN) the connection between pins 7 & 8.

– Yes, I think connection by soldering is a bad option as it limits the usefulness of the interface, I have an adapter but consider a switch to be a better option.

 

 

– Is there anything else to do for switching from K-Line to DCAN then disconnecting pin 7&8? Unfortunately I don’t have a DCAN model available.

– As soon as you connect the interface to the car and your computer, run DCAN.exe to configure the comms rate. I have only used my K+DCAN interface with DCAN cars.

 

 

– Is it necessary to do so every time I want to use DCAN or is the interface staying in DCAN mode once I ran DCAN.exe?

– You only need to run it when you are switching between modes. If you run it the first time you connect to a DCAN car, your computer will retain the settings.

 

 

– How do I switch back to K-Line? Just by connecting the two pins or is further action on the computer required?

– Earlier e39 had both the OBD port in the cabin and the round 20 pin connector under the hood.

 

The OBD port only allowed access to limited modules, I think only the DME in fact.

 

I always switch my K+D CAN adapter between K and D CAN protocols as I need to, depending on the car that I’m connecting to.

I use the DOS version of the DCAN utility. As mentioned if you only use the adapter on the e39, run the utility once and set the adapter to K CAN and leave it at that.

 

In fact thinking about it I use the same adapter for INPA, DIS and ISID.

 

With these K DCAN cables there are two subtle different versions, one with pin 8 enabled, one with it disabled. The one with it disabled is ideal for e90 newer than 03/07 & that era, these leads often come with a black adapter to re-enable the pin 8 (by just tying it to pin 9) so it will also be suitable for e46/e39/e63 etc. The ones with pin 8 active are just older versions of the cable. Worst cast scenario you just need to modify the cable & stuck a switch on it to toggle pin 8 on/off as needed.

 

Finally there are a lot of rubbish adapter cables out there. Finding a good one can be tricky.

 

 

– I have a 2003 E39 so there is no OBD1 anymore. How do you switch the modes physically? Do you use such a adapter to connect Pin 7&8?

  • – If you don‘t plan to use the cable on any cars that have DCAN(2007+) then you can pop open the case and solder a jumper between them. When you do this the DCAN functionality will no longer work though.
